Obituary of Jill “Jilly” Elizabeth English

It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Jill “Jilly” English at the age of 59, surrounded by her loving family. Jill was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, whose legacy of love, strength, and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.

Jill was the beloved life-long soulmate and high school sweetheart of Bobby, with whom she shared 46 years of love and 37 years of marriage. Together, they built a life full of love and laughter. Jill was a proud and loving mother to Emmalee (Ryan) Webber and Rachel "Boo Boo Bear," and a Granner to her adored grandchildren Maddox, Harper, Colton, and Norah. Her grandchildren were her world, and she cherished every moment spent with them.

She was also a devoted mother to her loyal pup Ruby, and a cherished sister to Cameron (April Kilpatrick) Maddox. Jill’s heart was as big as her circle of friends, and she was a long-time, treasured friend to Sandy (Dave) Leemet and their children, June Bug (Willy) and Grant Leemet as well as her student, whom she referred to as “Son”, Brandon.

Jill was predeceased by her parents, Carolyn and Donald Maddox, whose loss she endured with remarkable strength and resilience. In the wake of their passing, she carried on with an unbreaka-ble spirit and became an unwavering advocate for others.

Jill’s career as an Academic Advisor and Professor at Niagara College reflected her passion for helping others. Her dedication to her students and colleagues was a testament to her generous heart and commitment to making a difference. Jill was a fierce advocate for human rights and jus-tice, always standing up for what was right. Her love for the history of Niagara Falls also painted a beautiful backdrop for her incredible journey through life. Beyond her professional achievements, Jill’s mentorship inspired countless individuals to pursue their dreams, leaving a lasting legacy in the community she loved so much. Her office was a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community, offer-ing support and a place where they could find guidance and acceptance whenever they needed it Jill will be deeply missed by her many nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, and students, all of whom she touched with her warm spirit and giving nature.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Merritton Community Center on February 8, 2025, from 12-4p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jill’s honor to the Mark Preece Family House, an organization that assisted the family during these difficult times. Online condolences may be shared on Jill's tribute page found at EssentialsNiagara.com

Jill was our son’s academic advisor, and she came into our lives at a time when things were not going well at all and we felt lost, frightened and hopeless. She met us with compassion, empathy and positivity and the dark clouds parted,. We immediately felt like our son was going to be OK with Jill on his team. Jill continued to be a great advocate and support for our son in his ongoing academic journey, whatever bumps we encountered. I was glad that our son had her to turn to, and I was so grateful myself to be able to reach out to her when I was anxious or needed information. We didn’t know Jill long, but it was long enough to know she was a wonderful, unique, radiant spirit and that we are better for having known her. Our sincere condolences to Jill’s family for your loss, you are in our hearts at this sad time.

I would like to express my most sincere condolences to the family as you deal with the loss of a truly great influence in many people’s lives. I can only imagine the type of mother and grandmother she was. I worked very closely with Jill at NC and was witness to the depth of her compassion, empathy and love for her students. Her office was truly a safe space for them but also for any faculty who came to seek assistance. Jill you were one in a million and my life was enriched for knowing you.

Our deepest condolences to Bob, Emmalee, Rachel and the entire family. I only spent one year in school with Jill at Niagara College but she had such a huge impact on me. She was the “mature” student coming into a class of mostly 20 somethings but she was everyone’s favourite, and she was the best and brightest student in the class. I cherish the many nights I shared around her table working on projects and sharing our lives. She was always there to listen and give advice, she was hilarious and always cracked me up, and she made killer snacks for our study sessions. I can’t believe we have to say goodbye so soon.

While I only knew Jill a few short months, the positive impact she had is something I will carry with me forever. While Jill has so many incredible qualities that others have shared, one thing that stood out is how much she loved her family. Every time I saw Jill, she had numerous updates or memories to share about her family, and her love and admiration was evident. She fondly shared with me how much she enjoyed making different types of waffles with her grandchildren, something so small, that she cherished deeply. I feel truly blessed to have been given the chance to get to know her recently, and learn so much about life and kindness through her generosity and advocacy. I will be thinking of you all, and know that I will continue to spread Jill’s light.

Jill was a very good friend that I had in grade 7 and 8 at Burliegh Hill School and carried on to Merritton High.
Sadly we lost touch our lives went in different directions. I remember watching the love blossom with her and Bob in high school and glad they had many years together. I wish all her family peace at this time.

My heartfelt condolences, Jill was such an amazing person. I am so grateful for the many moments I had with Jill over the years. The impact she had on me, both professionally and personally, will stay with me always. I’ll miss the many thoughtful chats we shared, and I know I’m not alone in feeling that way.

Her influence will undoubtedly live on long after her, and the college will feel very different without her. The way Jill made people feel special, listened to, and connected was something truly remarkable—something that will be missed by so many.

I had the pleasure of working with Jill for the past year at Niagara College. The moment I started, Jill made me feel welcome and ensured I knew I could come to her if I had any questions. Her love for her job and students was apparent from the moment I met her. I’m still in complete shock and offer my sincere condolences to her family. I feel like I know them as Jill often shared a funny or endearing story about her husband, daughters or grandchildren. The office will not be the same without her.

I was both shocked and very saddened to hear the news of Jill’s passing. When I first started at NC, as a new colleague off Jill’s, one of the first things I noticed and immediately loved about Jill was how open, real and down to earth she was. I was in my early advisor days back then, and she was a great mentor, and actually prepared me for the interview that got me the position I am in today. I am forever grateful if the time, support and guidance she gave me. It was then and there we also became friends. There were always laughs (and candies) when at times I needed a break….Jill’s office was always open and always a refuge. She was incredibly well liked by students and staff alike, and her loss is felt by many in the NC community. My deepest condolences to her husband, kids and grandkids. Much strength, love and light in this difficult time.

Jill was an integral part of our CICE and GAS teams, radiating warmth, compassion, and an unwavering dedication to student success. Her remarkable career was a testament to her tireless advocacy, particularly for students with higher needs. Jill’s gift for connecting with students from all walks of life was nothing short of extraordinary – a rare blend of empathy, kindness, and authenticity. I always knew that when a little added push was needed to right the path of a student or some finessing to their academic plan was required, Jill was but a phone call away.

As a colleague and friend, Jill embodied the very essence of our Niagara College community: heart, compassion, and professionalism. Her legacy will continue to inspire us, illuminating the path forward with her timeless spirit, passion, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Jill’s impact on our lives, our work, and our students will never fade. Her memory will remain etched in our hearts, a reminder of the transformative power of kindness and dedication. Jill’s magic will continue to inspire generations to come.

My deepest sympathies to the English and Maddox families. Having grown up together on Parkhill I had the pleasure of sharing the fondest childhood memories with Cam and Jill. The doors on the Maddox home were always open and inviting. Whether it was building a tree fort, hiking the hill and later enjoying a drum session in the downstairs “studio” I couldn’t have had a better childhood. These memories I cherish and hold dear to my heart. You will always be the “Princess of Parkhill”.
